I highly recommend this book for any writer: WALKING ON ALLIGATORS: A BOOK OF MEDITATIONS FOR WRITERS by Susan Shaughnessy Today, on page 13, I found Susan's words just what I needed to forge on with my book project: First, she quotes B. C. Forbes, "One worthwhile task carried to a successful conclusion is worth half a hundred half-finished tasks." She goes on with this mini-essay: "Ah, the joy of writing ... "Wait a minute. What joy of writing?" "Completing a writing project brings a rush of joy like no other. The work has been conceived, it has been planned; it has been attempted--often on pure courage alone; and it has been brought to a conclusion. Now it must be relinquished. But for a moment, you hold it and enjoy it. "Compare this to the fatigue of projects that hang on, never fully attempted, never completely let go. "Where do your energies deserve to go? What reward do your energies deserve to enjoy?" Finally, Susan Shaughnessy offers a parting focusing thought: "Today, I'll reaffirm my commitment to completion. I will resolve to finish what needs finishing. I will fix my eyes on the finish line." Do you see why I highly recommend this book? It is full of gems like this one. I bought this book years ago when I was still living in Houston, Texas. It has helped me in the past to even accept that I AM a writer. After losing track of WALKING ON ALLIGATORS in my last move from one Tennessee city to another, I recently purchased a second copy and have begun reading one piece like this every day. With each reading, I find the courage to be who I have always wanted to be since second grade ... A Writer! This book has helped and is helping me still. I highly recommend it to you.
