This is a very precisely written analysis of the Ypres Salient and surrounding area. The author has arranged the book to include every possible walk in the area and each walk is packed with exact and interesting detail. As there were at least four noted battles in the area (although, if truth be told, after October 1914 it was never out of the active war zone) then the walks necessarily cross-reference the various battles and it is not difficult to be confused. This is not the fault of the author but of the history and geography of the area. 'Walking the Salient' is a painstakingly methodical book and very obviously, a labour of love. I would recommend it highlyThis is the first of the series that I have read as I am about to visit the Yypres Salient. I would certainly buy more of the series as I intend to visit the Somme battlefield in the very near future. On a very positive practical note, the book exemplifies an expression beloved of publishers, 'pocket-sized', which for all the right reasons, cannot be said of the seminal work on the First World War battlefields, the absolutely superb, 'Before Endeavours Fade' by Rose Coombes.
