Starting out as a fan of the TV show, I decided to start delving into the comics, interested in how the source material was written and presented. I have not yet been let down, and the 4th compilation book in the series is no different. For those of you who may be fans of the series, a bulk of this book focuses on life at the prison and the ongoing conflict with Woodbury and the Governor. The writing stays true to the series and the illustrations and detailed and very well done, as many of the more grizzly panels will make you pull your head back and go "ugh". This is a good thing. For a comic book that relies on a combination of conversation and illustration, The Walking Dead does a superb job with both, pulling you into the universe. After I started reading the book, I was interrupted by a few life events, so I was forced to put it down for a few weeks. However, once I found the time to read again, I was locked in until I had finished the entire book. It's that good, and that interesting. In addition, there are many storylines that play out much differently from the television show, so if you are hoping to still be shocked and surprised, this book will deliver in spades. Some of the main characters in show who hadn't made it to the prison are still around, and others who are still present in the TV series (now in season 6), meet their end in these pages. For that reason, if you enjoy the The Walking Dead universe, it's worth your time to explore both the show and the comics. In summary, Book 4 picks up right where Book 3 left off, with plenty of character development, plot progression, and surprises to keep you on your toes throughout. As soon as I reached the final page I was disappointed Book 5 wasn't on my book shelf ready for me to keep reading. Also, as noted in my other WD book reviews, the comic book covers at the end of the book look fantastic. Highly recommended.
