This is the Sky mini series that was inspired by a one off Christmas special about the early years of comedy genius Kathy Burke. She actually wrote the whole thing and it is done with oodles of love and as expected lots of comedy. Let it transport you back to the heady days of 1978 in a sunny Islington. Summer is here and so is punk rock - with a bang. Kathy played brilliantly by Ami Metcalf, is at a Roman Catholic school where she spends her time with best mate Mary.They talk about boys and what is really `a sin' and try to avoid the slightly mental `Jimmy the Jew' who is played by another comedy genius in the shape of Jerry Sadowitz. Kathy is resigned to not being pretty but is determined to make up for it with buckets of personality, and I think she more than makes up for it. We also have the real Kathy Burke playing `Angry Nun', who spends her time ignoring the girls and upsetting the `Pretty Nun'. This so called `Pretty Nun' is played with devastating brilliance by Sean Gallagher.We also have a smorgasbord of fab music from the likes of `The Specials' `Blondie' and the totally original `X-Ray Specs'. There are loads of references to the culture of the time as well as some well out of place Teddy Boys, and a search for the ghost of Joe Orton. I watched the whole series in one hit it was so engrossing. I really loved it. Kathy clearly did not have a golden child hood, the hints at violence both familial and otherwise are all too evident, but she has decided to see everything through the prism of optimism and uses humour as her vehicle. This has the production values you would expect from the BBC which all adds to the quality of the series.This was a joy from start to finish and the only criticism is that there are only four episodes, I could have watched this till the cows come home, if indeed they still do in our modern times. Also great to see Kathy Burke back on our screens I hope we continue to enjoy her performances for many years to come. She is a great actress both comedy and straight and now has proven herself as a great writer too - thoroughly recommended.
